Ultrasound imaging also known as sonography uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the body. Ultrasound is safe, painless, and does not use ionizing radiation. During an ultrasound exam, ultrasound gel and a small transducer (probe) will be placed directly on the skin. The transducer collects the sounds that bounce back and a computer generates an image with the sound waves. It is a noninvasive test that helps providers diagnose and treat medical conditions.
